Volunteer

The Houston Maritime Museum is looking for enthusiastic individuals who are eager to share their knowledge and passion for all things maritime.

Training is provided and no prior knowledge is required. Schedules are flexible, though we do recommend that volunteers spend at least four hours a month at the museum.

Volunteer Positions:

  • Tour Guides
  • Office
  • Gift Shop
  • Research
  • Tour Guides

Tour guides are the heart and soul of the Houston Maritime Museum. Each tour guide is encouraged to design their own tour of the museum and to highlight their personal interests. No prior knowledge is required and training is provided by experienced guides. Tours usually last about one hour and each guide leads no more than ten visitors at a time. Tour guides are essential to the museum’s mission – the more guides we have, the more tours we can schedule, allowing us to share the wonder and influence of maritime history and industry with a wider audience. Join the HMM family today!

  • Office

The tour guides provide visitors with unforgettable experiences, but the real magic happens behind the scenes! The HMM office is currently seeking help with the following projects:

    • Educational Programming
    • Organizing historic museum records and files
    • Digitizing select files
    • Organizing digital files and pictures
    • Updating museum contact and collections records
    • Social Media presence

  • Gift Shop

The museum is in the process of updating the Gift Shop. If you’ve ever dreamed of owning a boutique or toy shop, this is your chance to get to get your toes wet. We need a volunteer to help us inventory our current stock, reorganize our displays, and order new pieces.

  • Research

The Houston Maritime Museum provides fresh content for members and visitors as often as possible. We are currently seeking individuals interested in compiling research for a new exhibit on our founder, Jim Manzolillo, his shrimp boat building business, and shrimping in general.
